Torsten Braun: Sabbatical 2010

Bell Labs

During my stay at Bell Labs, Holmdel NJ, USA (July 26 – September 27, 2010), I worked in the group of Dr. Markus Hofmann on extending the paradigm of content-centric networking towards its applicability for more general services. This resulted in the novel concept of Service-Centric Networking (SCN). Two papers have been published at the 6th GI/ITG KuVS Fachgespräch Future Internet at Hannover and the 4th International Workshop on the Network of the Future at Kyoto. The paper is available here. Moreover, I gave invited talks on SCN at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the session on Information-Centric Networking at the Future Internet Assembly in Budapest.

Lancaster University

At Lancaster University, UK (September 19 – November 12, 2010), I worked with several people in the Infolab21 Department, namely Proff. David Hutchison, Geoff Coulson, and Andreas Mauthe. In the area of mobile sensor networks, we came up with a novel approach to integrate emulated mobile sensors into a wireless sensor network testbed, allowing to perform experiments using real-world sensor network applications in an emulated mobile and wireless network environment. The concept has been published at the 6th Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks at Kiel. The proceedings of the workshop are available here. A publication on extensions of Service-Centric Networking is still in preparation. During my stay at UK, Prof. Simon Dobson invited me for a visit at University of St. Andrews and a talk on “Design and Evaluation of an Adaptive and Energy-Efficient MAC Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks” in the seminar on Wireless Sensing on November 11, 2010.

Universidade de São Paulo

From November 28 to December 18, 2010, I visited Prof. Jó Ueyama at Universidade de São Paulo in São Carlos, Brazil. We exchanged several ideas in combining cloud computing and wireless sensor networks, highly mobile ad-hoc networks etc. Some reports made it to the press (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). I gave two talks on the “Design and Evaluation of Energy-Efficient Wireless Sensor Network Protocols”at Universidade de São Paulo at São Carlos (December 2, 2010) and at the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (December 13, 2010). Moreover, I worked with Gustavo Pessin on localization in wireless local area networks. Two publications resulted from that work at the 1st Brazilian Conference on Critical Embedded Systems (publication available here) and ICST Comsware (publication available here).

Purdue University

Finally, I visited Prof. Bharat Bhargava and the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University at West Lafayette IL, USA, from January 24 to February 2, 2011. First, I gave an invited talk on “User and Machine Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure for Distributed Testbeds” in the CERIAS seminar. Second, I talked about the “Design and Evaluation of an Adaptive and Energy-Efficient MAC Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks” in the Computer Science Colloquium.
